1:1 iPad Program

Valley Christian Junior High School has lightened the backpack!

Since the 2012-13 school year, we have put an iPad in the hands of every student. Paper and pencil are not obsolete, but rather the foundation for learning is found through technology. The iPad is not just another tool in the student’s backpack; it is becoming the backpack – providing digital access to educational apps, textbooks, and teacher-driven curriculum without the backbreaking load of textbooks.

This information delivery system fosters problem solving and critical thinking skills, creates authentic learning environments, and addresses multiple learning styles in a standards-driven classroom. This iPad program helps students:

  • Organize life. The iPad program provides students with instant access to and training in organizational tools to enhance productivity and prepare them for assuming the responsibilities of a successful 21st century student.

  • Lighten the load. By replacing at least 30% of paper textbooks, the iPad helps lighten backpacks. We will increase the number of textbooks available in electronic form as they become available in future years.

  • Learn anywhere, anytime. Using the iPad provides students with continuous access to Learn@VCS and other educational resources and activities, both in and out of the classroom.

  • Digitize learning. Each teacher continues to develop curriculum to transition from paper-based assignments to digitally-produced content.

  • Know what they know. Teachers conduct formative assessments on an ongoing basis, using immediate feedback systems that allow students, parents, and teachers to understand students’ progress in real-time.

Will I need to purchase the iPad?

Yes. Every student will be required to bring an iPad to school every day.

I already own an iPad, can I use it?

Yes, as long as the iPad meets our technical criteria, has enough available space, and is associated with your student Warriorlife Apple ID.

I already own an iPad, but I didn’t purchase AppleCare+?

If you purchased your iPad within the last 30 days, you can still purchase AppleCare+ at an Apple Retail Store. We strongly recommend adding AppleCare+ since it extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPad and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage (each subject to a service fee). If you purchased your iPad outside of the 30-day window, keep in mind that an iPad not covered by AppleCare+ only comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support.

May students opt out of the iPad altogether?

No, because the iPad will be the main conduit for viewing many textbooks, turning in much of the student’s work, and will be the tool used to accomplish many tasks in class. Parents in need of financial help are encouraged to contact the school.

May I use another device for school in place of the iPad?

No. You will need an iPad to meet the technical requirements of our 1:1 iPad Program. We are using iOS Apps which only work on an iPad and eBooks that can only be read in iOS App. Just as importantly, teachers are creating a learning environment for you that requires a device that is mobile, always-on, multi-touch-enabled, and multi-functional.

What accessories will be needed with the iPad?

An approved iPad case should be purchased to protect the iPad. Additionally, some classes may require earbuds and/or a stylus.

Do I need to buy a Bluetooth keyboard?

While some students may prefer to type on a Bluetooth keyboard, it is not required.

Why won’t a 16GB iPad meet the minimum requirements?

16GB iPads do not meet the minimum requirement standards due to the storage demands of digital textbooks, apps, and multimedia files.

Will there be technical support for student iPads on campus?

Yes, our IT Department is in full support of the iPad program and has geared up to meet the needs of students and parents. One of the reasons that the iPad was chosen was based on its durability and reliability. Also, AppleCare+ allows students to seek help at any Apple Store, as another resource alongside our own IT support.

What happened if an iPad is broken, lost, or stolen?

Each student is responsible for his/her own personal property, including their iPad. Every iPad purchased comes with one year of hardware coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support through Apple. AppleCare+ for iPad extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPad and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage.

We also strongly recommend downloading the Find My iPad app, which allows you and your child to locate the device should it become lost. Find My iPad shows you the approximate location of your iPad on a map. Using a carefully selected password will also help protect your iPad.

Ultimately, as in the textbook-only days, students will need to take care of this important investment.

Will students use other devices in class?

Those classes needing the more robust computing platforms, such as 3D Design, Project Lead the Way, and others, will use the computer labs and laptop carts on campus.

Will my child still need a computer at home?

While the iPad will meet the majority of the students’ technology needs, there will still be a need for working on a personal computer at times; for example, when a lengthy paper is to be written or a spreadsheet must be designed.

How will a student’s safety online be ensured?

VCS maintains sophisticated content filters and firewalls to actively manage the wireless network on campus. Each student already agrees to our Acceptable Use Policy as a condition of enrollment. This policy will continue to outline the safety measures in place and the practices that we expect of every student.
